It was all over the news when the Big Three car manufacturers were lambasted for flying private jets to attend Congressional hearings, but the vast majority of Americans weren’t privy to the reasons for the CEO’s method of travel. Manufacturers shipped 1,865 planes, a decline of 3.5% from 2010, while billings increased 0.4% to $19.1 billion.
Not included in the data released Feb. 22 by the General Aviation Manufacturers Association (GAMA) are figures from Hawker Beechcraft’s fourth-quarter, which will be released about March 31. You may have read he landed in Antarctica. Well, he did, but that is so six days ago. Now he has landed on Easter Island after a 15-hour, 2,000 nautical mile flight at 150 knots. He’s zigzagging all over the place and has already flown enough miles to circle the globe, but he is only halfway. When he is done he will have flown the lightest aircraft ever (640 pounds) around the world to the west, have a record gas mileage (he is getting 28 statute miles per gallon), and have his 12th book. He is measuring soot in the air every inch of the way, and intentionally detouring to fresh water sites to show the world that water, not oil, may be our real crisis. Is it all going smoothly? Not always. Here is his report on a recent flight over South America:

“Amazing views were spoiled by engine problem, loosing [sic] some RPM and power so turned to Calafate. After several looong minutes engine sound got back to normal so I continued toward the glaciers Perito Moreno, Upsala, Viedma and Cerro Torre and Fitz Roy which were clear of clouds in almost no wind. Great views but a lot frustration as I was not confident with engine run and had a strong smell of fuel when I opened the window. “

Lenarčič is a World Rounder, adventure pilot, biologist, alpinist and photographer.
