Batton named president Virginia Aviation Council

Tuesday, April 3rd, 2012

Richmond, VA –  The Virginia Aviation Council elected Ray Batton as their next President at their March 17 meeting. Batton flies a Turbo 182, is active in the EAA Young Eagles program and is President of a Fortune 500 company. He also seeks to open the world of aviation to adults who’ve thought about flight as an unattainable goal. “I have taken a large number of business people for rides,” says Batton. “They often think flying is too difficult or scary until you get them in the plane.” href="http://www.generalaviationnews.com/2012/04/03/batton-named-president-virginia-aviation-council/">Continue Reading »

See spectacular Sun `n Fun photos

Friday, March 30th, 2012

Scott Kelby, president of an association devoted to improving everyone’s photos, visited Sun `n Fun in Lakeland, Fla., Thursday and got some amazing shots. See them here (and click the pictures to enlarge). The National Association of Photoshop Professionals, run by himself and his wife Kalebra, is much like AOPA–a membership organization with magazines, a national convention, a spectacular Web site, training videos–and like AOPA, managed by a pilot (click “Kalebra” above).

Is There Room For A 240-HP Turbine?

Thursday, March 29th, 2012

A Florida-based company called Diemech Turbine Solutions thinks so. Here at Sun ‘n Fun it’s showing a nice little 241-HP turbine that weighs about 125 pounds, less accessories. In this video, Diemech president Christian Skoppe told AVweb that it’s made an agreement with the Czech-based PBS to eventually certify the TP 100 engine, which will be available in both turboprop and turboshaft versions. The market thrust, says Skoppe, isn’t so much speed as it is fuel availability, a story we’re hearing more and more from the international market. With avgas under threat of extinction, more OEMs and buyers are looking toward heavy fuel solutions, either Jet A or low-sulphur diesel fuels. The TP 100 springs from a small turbojet engine PBS made for the drone market, but the company also has experience in the manufacture of APUs.

Sunday, March 4th, 2012

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The president’s 2013 budget plan to charge $100 per flight to aircraft using controlled airspace was never expected to be adopted and it got another major setback when 195 bipartisan members of the House of Representatives sent Obama a letter opposing the fee. href="http://www.generalaviationnews.com/2012/03/04/congress-sends-strong-message-to-white-house-on-user-fees/">Continue Reading »

Making progress at PAMA

Wednesday, February 29th, 2012

Our third edition of the PAMA Newsletter in General Aviation News reminds me of how fast our life goes by nowadays. When getting an A&P I never thought that writing articles for magazines and websites would be part of my daily routine.
I recall less than a year ago when I started as president of the Professional Aviation Maintenance Association, I was barraged with ideas and actions that needed attention. I am still sorting through some of them by priority. I am happy to report a couple of them are completed. href="http://www.generalaviationnews.com/2012/02/29/making-progress-at-pama/">Continue Reading »

Monday, February 13th, 2012

Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association President Craig Fuller is expressing disappointment that as part of his $3.8 trillion fiscal year 2013 budget, the president has included a $100 per-flight fee to fund the Federal Aviation Administration’s air traffic control services. href="http://www.generalaviationnews.com/2012/02/13/aopa-sees-deja-vu-with-user-fees/">Continue Reading »
