Don’t ask, don’t tell

Wednesday, May 16th, 2012

It’s no surprise to anyone in the aviation industry to hear that the pilot population is shrinking. Sure, it’s sad – but it’s not a surprise. We all know it’s shrinking. If only there were something we could do to reverse that trend.
Good news — there is. In fact that trend can be reversed relatively easily, and reasonably quickly, too. I know that’s true because it’s happening right here in my neighborhood. With a little nudge from you and your aviation-minded friends, it could happen in your neighborhood, too. href="http://www.generalaviationnews.com/2012/05/16/dont-ask-dont-tell/">Continue Reading »

TEL: Is there a Plan B ?

Wednesday, May 16th, 2012

A couple of years ago I created a href="http://www.zazzle.com/laptop4hire" >website to sell aviation-related items that publicize flying on unleaded auto fuel, or mogas as we call it. One bumper sticker that I created has proven to be prescient, “What You Going To Do When the TEL Runs Out?” That date may be rapidly approaching. href="http://www.generalaviationnews.com/2012/05/16/tel-is-there-a-plan-b/">Continue Reading »

LightSquared files for bankruptcy

Tuesday, May 15th, 2012

LightSquared has filed for bankruptcy, saying it will seek to resolve the concerns of U.S. regulators who thwarted the company’s plan to build a nationwide high-speed wireless network that tests showed interfered with GPS signals. According to a href="http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2012-05-14/lightsquared-failed-wireless-venture-files-for-bankruptcy.html" >Bloomberg report, LightSquared listed assets of $4.48 billion and debt of $2.29 billion in the bankruptcy filing, which is “intended to give LightSquared sufficient breathing room to continue working through the regulatory process that will allow us to build our 4G wireless network,” Chief Financial Officer Marc Montagner is quoted in the report. href="http://www.generalaviationnews.com/2012/05/15/lightsquared-files-for-bankruptcy/">Continue Reading »

FAA revises flight blocking rules

Tuesday, May 15th, 2012

The FAA has published new procedures that would give aircraft owners broader control over their flight information’s disclosure, according to a report at href="http://www.aopa.org/advocacy/articles/2012/120514faa-revises-flight-data-blocking-rules.html" >AOPA.org. The agency will accept comments on its notice of proposed process until June 8. href="http://www.generalaviationnews.com/2012/05/15/faa-revises-flight-blocking-rules/">Continue Reading »

Rotax launches new 912 iS fuel-injected engine

Sunday, May 13th, 2012

In a product launch somewhat comparable to an Apple product event, href="http://www.flyrotax.com/home.aspx" >BRP Rotax recently drew a large group of attendees to its facility in Gunskirchen, Austria, to launch its new 912 iS engine. In the tech world, “i” means Internet. In the light aviation world,  or more specifically BRP Rotax’s world, “i” now means injected. href="http://www.generalaviationnews.com/2012/05/13/rotax-launches-new-912-is-fuel-injected-engine/">Continue Reading »

Aerotrek success mirrors other positive news

Thursday, May 10th, 2012

href="http://www.aerotrek.aero/" >Aerotrek may be one of those “sleepers.” You know, the kind of company that does well, has few problems, and doesn’t need to make a lot of noise to be successful. Aerotrek’s tri-gear and taildragger models look great, fly well, and are priced so reasonably that sales are remarkably steady. The company ranks #12 in fleet size and came in fifth for 2011 registrations. href="http://www.generalaviationnews.com/2012/05/10/aerotrek-success-mirrors-other-positive-news/">Continue Reading »

Volunteer pilots fly to help whooping cranes

Wednesday, May 9th, 2012

As if being raised by humans in bird suits and taught to migrate by an ultralight aircraft wasn’t challenging enough, a reintroduced flock of endangered whooping cranes now faces a new challenge: Mastering nesting and rearing chicks. But crane biologists and general aviation pilots are banding together to use flights in small airplanes to see if they can assist the cranes and grow this population. href="http://www.generalaviationnews.com/2012/05/09/volunteer-pilots-fly-to-help-whooping-cranes/">Continue Reading »
